Phil Piratin

Phil Piratin (15 May 1907 – 10 December 1995) was a British Member of Parliament from the Communist Party of Great Britain, representing Mile End from 1945 to 1950.

Biography[]

Phil Piratin was raised in the industrial Essex region of southeastern England on 15 May 1907, the son of a Jewish tradesman. Piratin became involved with communism as a youth, becoming an anti-fascist and a member of the tenants' rights Stepney Tenants Defense League. During the 1930s, Piratin led anti-BUF marches in London, and he was elected to the Stepney Borough Council in 1937. In 1945, he was elected a Member of Parliament from Mile End, cooperating with crypto-communist members of the UK Labor Party. In 1950, he lost a bid for re-election in Stepney, as Mile End had been abolished as a constituency due to boundary changes. In 1957, he left his job as an editor for The Daily Worker to become a successful businessman, and he died in 1995.
