Peyton H. Colquitt (8 October 1831-22 September 1863) was a Confederate States Army Colonel who served in the American Civil War and was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga.

Biography[]

Peyton H. Colquitt was born in Campbell County, Georgia on 8 October 1831, the second son of Walter T. Colquitt and the brother of Alfred H. Colquitt. He was held back at West Point and resigned in 1853, and he went on to edit the Columbus Times and serve as a state representative and state senator. During the American Civil War, he served as a Confederate States Army colonel, and he assumed command of States Rights Gist's brigade after Gist assumed temporary divisional command before the Battle of Chickamauga. He was mortally wounded in the ensuing battle and died two days later.
