Peter Van Garrett (1728-1799) was a Dutch-American landowner and resident of Sleepy Hollow.
Biography[]
Peter Van Garret was born in 1728 in Sleepy Hollow, New York. Son of a wealthy Dutch family, Van Garret was the most powerful man in town. In 1799, Van Garret dictated his will, which included his son Dirk and his close friend and former employee Baltus van Tassel. Few days later, he was found death in a cropfield decapitated and with only his body. Not very far from there was found a crashed coach with another headless body, his son Dirk. His death was atributed to the Headless Horseman.
