Peter Chamberlaine (1660-22 July 1718) was a commodore of the Royal Navy of Great Britain who served under Governor Woodes Rogers during his war on piracy in the West Indies.
Biography[]
Peter Chamberlaine was born in 1660, and became a commodore in the Royal Navy of Great Britain. In the early 18th century, he was sent to assist Rogers in his reforms in the Bahamas and his hunting of Pirates who roamed the Caribbean Sea. Fiercely loyal to King George I of Great Britain, he hated his civilian superior and the pirates, and in 1718 he took matters into his own hands during the attack on Nassau. He threatened to kill the pirate governors outright, but Rogers insisted that they be able to make their decision: return to England but lose their money, or be hanged by the neck until dead as a criminal.
Chamberlaine's death
Chamberlaine took matters into his own hands by ordering a blockade of Nassau to prevent any pirates from escaping the city, in addition to destroying all of the pirate ships anchored in Nassau harbor, but he died before he could issue the orders. He was assassinated by pirate Edward Kenway aboard his ship after Kenway jumped down from the main topsail and stabbed him and a subordinate, and, later that night, his blockade was destroyed by the fire ship Royal Phoenix.
