Peter Buell Porter (14 August 1773 – 20 March 1844) was a member of the US House of Representatives (DR-NY 15) from 4 March 1809 to 3 March 1813 (succeeding William Kirkpatrick and preceding Joel Thompson) and from NY-21 from 4 March 1815 to 23 January 1816 (succeeding Nathaniel W. Howell and preceding Archibald S. Clarke) and US Secretary of War from 23 May 1828 to 9 March 1829 (succeeding James Barbour and preceding John Eaton).
Biography[]
Peter Buell Porter was born in Salisbury, Connecticut in 1773, and he became a lawyer in Canandaigua, New York in 1793. From 1797 to 1804, he served as Ontario County Clerk, and he moved to Buffalo in 1809 and became a transportation businessman. He went on to serve in the US House of Representatives from 1809 to 1813 and from 1815 to 1816, and he led a US Army brigade at the Battle of Chippewa, the Battle of Lundy's Lane, and the Siege of Fort Erie during the War of 1812. From 1815 to 1816, he served as Secretary of State of New York, and he served as a regent of the University of the State of New York from 1824 to 1830 and as Secretary of War from 1828 to 1829. He moved to Niagara Falls in 1836 and served as a Whig presidential elector in 1840, and he died in 1844.
