Pete du Pont

Pierre Samuel "Pete" du Pont IV (22 January 1935-8 May 2021) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-DL at-large) from 3 January 1971 to 3 January 1977 (succeeding William Roth and preceding Thomas B. Evans Jr.) and Governor of Delaware from 18 January 1977 to 15 January 1985 (succeeding Sherman W. Tribbitt and preceding Mike Castle).

Biography[]

Pierre Samuel du Pont IV was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1935, the grandson of Lammot du Pont II. He worked for his family business before serving in the State House from 1969 to 1971, in the US House of Representatives from 1971 to 1977, and as Governor from 1977 to 1985. He reduced the state income tax, restrained future tax increases, and limited government spending, reviving the state's business climate and prosperity. In 1981, he helped establish the credit card industry in Delaware. He failed in his 1988 presidential bid, and he died in 2021.
