Pete Hodges

Pete Hodges was Sheriff of Franklin County, Virginia during the 1930s.

Biography[]

Pete Hodges was born in Franklin County, Virginia, and he was elected as County Sheriff during Prohibition. He was friendly with the Bondurant brothers, buying moonshine from them and turning a blind eye towards their business. In 1931, against his wishes, the government sent in Commonwealth's Attorney Mason Wardell and US Marshal Charley Rakes to suppress the local moonshining industry, and, while Hodges warned Forrest Bondurant against making enemies with the newcomers, Hodges personally told Rakes that he disliked him. Later that year, when Rakes attempted to execute Forrest, Hodges shot Rakes in the leg, saving Forrest, who then executed Rakes in a nearby tunnel.
