The Persian Gulf is a sea in western Asia, lying between Iran to the northeast and the Arabian Peninsula to the southwest. It is connected to the Indian Ocean by the Strait of Hormuz, and, ever since the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s, there has been a naming dispute over the gulf, which the Arab nations sought to rename to the "Arabian Gulf".
