Pernilla

Pernilla (7 February 1033-2 April 1084) was the Queen of Axum from 1066 to 1084 with King Dawit II of Axum.

Biography[]

Pernilla was born in 1033 to the Ethiopian Jewish House of Sparrhult, and she was a courtier of Axum. In 1066 she married King Dawit II of Axum, although she was only a courtier. Their marriage was paid for by Dawit himself, hoping to regain prestige lost by his marriage to Pernilla. In 1069 she gave birth to Falashina Gideon, her first daughter. She later gave birth to two more.

On 18 August 1076, Pernilla complained about King Dawit being absent so often, so he decided to buy some sort of jewellery for her, making her fall deeply in love with him. Her somewhat fading sense of favor towards him grew by much due to this action. On 3 March 1077 their first son, Finhas Gideon, was born, and he became the heir to Axum. She died a natural death at the age of 51 on 2 April 1081.
