The Perioikoi were the free, non-citizen class of Spartan society who lived in Laconia and Messenia, Greece during the Classical era. They controlled commerce and business, engaged in crafts and manufacturing, and made the weapons and armor of the Spartan army; the Spartans saw all commercial and money-making activities to be beneath them. The Perioikoi were also allowed to travel freely beyond Sparta's borders, unlike Spartan citizens.
