Peretz Shorshaty

Peretz Shorshaty (died October 1941) was a Belarusian Jewish partisan who fought with the Bielski Otriad during World War II.

Biography[]

Peterz Shorshaty was born in Horodyszcze, Congress Poland, Russian Empire to a family of Polish Jews, living among 3,000 other Jews. In October 1941, Nazi Germany killed or deported all but fifty of the Jews in the village, and Shorshaty and his friend Yakov Twersky hid in a well. They starved for two days before locating the Bielski Otriad in the Lipczanska Forest (Naliboki Forest, Belarus), and they joined forces with the partisans to fight against Nazi Germany. The partisans killed several collaborators before they ambushed a German patrol; they killed a few German troops before a truck full of Wehrmacht soldiers arrived. Shorshaty was mortally wounded while Yakov was killed instantly, and Shorshaty died upon returning to camp.
