Peregrine Bertie (12 October 1555 – 25 June 1601) was a diplomat and soldier of England during the Dutch Revolt and Anglo-Spanish War.
Biography[]
Peregrine Bertie was born on 12 October 1555 in Wesel, Germany, and he would later return to England and become a naturalized citizen. In 1580, he succeeded his mother in the House of Lords, and he became a diplomat; he accompanied Francis, Duke of Anjou from Canterbury to Antwerp in 1582 while he was meeting Elizabeth I of England as a possible suitor, invested Frederick II of Denmark with the Order of the Garterthat same year, obtained Danish support for the independence of the United Provinces in 1585, and negotiated England's support for the Netherlands during the Dutch Revolt. In March 1586, he became Governor of Bergen-op-Zoom during the Anglo-Spanish War, during which the English went to all-out war with the Spanish Empire. On 22 September 1586, he was defeated at the Battle of Zutphen, and he took part in the 1590 siege of Paris along with Henri IV of England before returning home and becoming governor of Berwick-upon-Tweed. He died in 1601.
