Pepin of Italy (April 773-8 July 810) was the King of Italy from 15 April 781 to 8 July 810, succeeding Charlemagne and preceding Bernard of Italy.
Biography[]
Pepin was born in April 773, the son of Charlemagne and Hildegard Geroldonen and a member of the Catholic French House of Karling. In 781 his father had Pope Adrian I crown him as the king of Italy, and from 791 to 796 he fought the Avar Khaganate, assaulting their ring-shaped strongholds. In 810 Pepin besieged the city of Venice, defended by Doge Obelerio degli Antenori, but his army was ravaged by the diseases of the swamps surrounding the 100 islands of Venice. His army withdrew, and Pepin died of illness a few months later.
