The People's Republic of Mozambique was a communist state that administered the country of Mozambique from 25 June 1975 to 1 December 1990. The people's republic was established after FRELIMO successfully achieved Mozambican independence from Portugal, and the one-party state had close ties to the Soviet Union and socialist Angola. From 1977 to 1992, the FRELIMO-led communist government fought against the conservative RENAMO rebels in the Mozambican Civil War, which ended in a compromise between FRELIMO and RENAMO. Mozambique transitioned to democracy, and multi-party elections were held in 1994.
