Pentecostalism is a renewal movement within Protestant Christianity that places special emphasis on a personal experience of God through the baptism with the Holy Spirit. Pentecostals are considered to be evangelicals, as they adhere to the inerrancy of the Bible, and they believe that baptizing in the Holy Spirit allows for the baptized to live a spirit-filled and empowered life. Pentecostalism emerged in the early 20th century, and there are over 279,000,000 Pentecostals worldwide. Since the 1960s, Pentecostals have gained acceptance from other Christian traditions, and their beliefs on Spirit baptism and spiritual gifts have been embraced by non-Pentecostals in Protestant and Catholic churches through the "Charismatic movement".
