The Pegorino crime family was an American Mafia crime syndicate that operated in northern New Jersey and in parts of New York City. The family, led by Jimmy Pegorino, was nicknamed the "New Jersey Mob" for controlling most of North Jersey's criminal enterprises, and it attempted to increase its influence in New York under Jimmy Pegorino. Pegorino wanted for his family to be represented on The Commission, but he lacked the respect needed to join the Commission, as he was known to hire "wannabe wiseguys" off of the streets to serve as his dumb muscle.
Pegorino decided to go to war with the Ancelotti crime family, the weakest of the New York families, to take their seat on The Commission for his family, and the Pegorinos allied with the McReary crime family of the Irish Mob to carry out operations against the Ancelottis. They managed to alienate the Albanian Mob from the Ancelottis by framing the Albanians for the murders of Ancelotti capos Frankie Garone and Anthony Spoleto, and the family also robbed money from the Ancelottis' waste management plant on Randalls and Wards Islands, stole a shipment of cocaine from their Russian Mafia allies, killed their underboss Charles Matteo before he could inform on them to the Commission, and kidnapped Giovanni Ancelotti's daughter Gracie Ancelotti.
However, the Pegorinos suffered from several defections, with many leaders of the family turning states to avoid imprisonment. Pegorino killed his own adopted son Anthony Corrado and his capo Ray Boccino for being "rats", and he became paranoid. The family also suffered from gang warfare with both the Ancelottis and the Pavano crime family, and the family declined in power. Pegorino managed to set up a deal with the Faustin crime family that would involve the sale of stolen Jaoming Triad heroin to Dimitri Rascalov in Elizabeth, New Jersey, seeing it as a major opportunity for him to become wealthy enough to join The Commission. However, his hitman Niko Bellic decided to get his own revenge on Rascalov in Red Hook, wiping out the Faustins and ruining the Pegorinos' chances of joining The Commission. Pegorino failed to kill Bellic in a drive-by shooting, and Bellic and Little Jacob tracked Pegorino down to the old casino on the Hudson River, where Pegorino and the last of his mobsters were holed up. Bellic killed every last Pegorino enforcer before chasing Pegorino down to Liberty Island and killing him there. The Pegorinos were wiped out, and the Pavanos and Ancelottis took over North Jersey.
