Pedro de Noronha

Pedro de Noronha, 3rd Count of Noronha (1817—1879) was a Portuguese naval officer and nobleman who served as the commander of the Portuguese Navy during the reign of King Luís I of Portugal. The son of Admiral Rodrigo de Noronha, the 2nd Count of Noronha and former navy commander under Queen Maria II of Portugal, he followed in his father's footsteps and become a skilled and aggressive officer. The Count oversaw the completion of Portugal's first four ironclad vessels. He died in his post in 1879, having overseen a period of modernization for the Portuguese Navy and expansion of its colonies in Africa.
