Pedro de Araujo Lima

Pedro de Araujo Lima (22 December 1793-7 June 1870) was Regent of the Empire of Brazil from 19 September 1837 to 23 July 1840 (succeeding Diogo Antonio Feijo) and Prime Minister of Brazil from 29 September 1848 to 8 October 1849 (succeeding Francisco de Paula Souza e Melo and preceding Jose da Costa Carvalho), from 4 May 1857 to 12 December 1858 (succeeding Luis Alves de Lima e Silva and preceding Antonio Paulino Limpo de Abreu), from 30 May 1862 to 15 January 1864 (interrupting Zacarias de Gois e Vasconcelos' terms), and from 12 May 1865 to 3 August 1866 (succeeding Francisco Jose Furtado and preceding De Gois). He was a member of the Conservative Party.

Biography[]

Pedro de Araujo Lima was born in Sirinhaem, Pernambuco, Brazil in 1793, and he came from a wealthy family of sugarcane plantation owners. He represented the rural aristocracy of the northeast during his political career, affiliating himself with the Conservative Party. Araujo Lima served as regent for the young King Pedro II of Brazil from 1837 until Pedro came of age in 1840, and he also served as Prime Minister from 1848 to 1849, from 1857 to 1858, from 1862 to 1864, and from 1865 to 1866. He died in 1870 at the age of 76.
