The Pawnee are a Native American tribe native to the US states of Kansas and Nebraska in the Midwest. In the early 19th century, the Pawnee tribe consisted of 10,000 people, and the tribe was one of the largest and most powerful tribes in the American West. The tribe was traditionally enemies with the Lakota and Cheyenne and occasionally enemies with the Comanche, and the population was reduced to 4,000 in 1860 and to 2,400 by 1873 due to disease, crop failure, and warfare. The Pawnee would ally with the USA during the US government's wars with the Sioux, and several Pawnee tribesmen served as US Army scouts. The Pawnee tribe currently has around 5,600 members.
