
Paul Sarbanes (3 February 1933-6 December 2020) was a member of the US Senate from Maryland (D) from 3 January 1977 to 3 January 2007, succeeding John Glenn Beall Jr. and preceding Ben Cardin; he previously served in the US House of Representatives from Maryland's 4th district from 3 January 1971 to 3 January 1973, succeeding George Hyde Fallon and preceding Marjorie Holt, and from the 3rd district from 3 January 1973 to 3 January 1977, succeeding Edward Garmatz and preceding Barbara Mikulski. He was the father of John Sarbanes.
Biography[]
Paul Sarbanes was born in Salisbury, Maryland on 3 February 1933 to Greek immigrant parents. He graduated from Princeton University, Balliol College, and Harvard Law School before being elected to the House of Delegates in 1966. He served until 1971, when he was elected to the US House of Representatives from Maryland's 4th district, and then from the 3rd district in 1973. In 1977, he was elected to the US Senate, and he was known to shun the limelight during his career, having a low-key career. He left the Senate in 2007, when Ben Cardin succeeded him in the Senate. He died in 2020 at the age of 87.
