Paul Hamilton

Paul Hamilton (16 October 1762-30 June 1816) was the Democratic-Republican Governor of South Carolina from 7 December 1804 to 9 December 1806 (succeeding James Burchill Richardson and preceding Charles Pinckney) and the United States Secretary of the Navy from 15 May 1809 to 1 January 1813 (succeeding Robert Smith and preceding William Jones).

Biography[]

Paul Hamilton was born in Saint Paul's Parish, South Carolina in 1762, and he served under General Francis Marion during the American Revolutionary War. After the war, he was elected to the State House in 1787, to the State Senate in 1794, as Comptroller in 1800, as Governor from 1804 to 1806, and as Secretary of the Navy from 1809 to 1813. He died in Beaufort in 1816.
