Paul Edgecomb (1891 - 2000) was an American prison guard at Cold Mountain Prison in Louisiana.

Biography[]

Paul Edgecomb is the commanding officer of the death row cellblock at Cold Mountain Penitentiary in Louisiana in 1935. He was married to Jan Edgecomb and was a father and a decent man. Though he didn't care for his position, the Depression dictated that he make the best of an unpleasant task. He watched out for his fellow guards and does what he could for the condemned men. He run a quiet and neat operation. He befriended John Coffey. When he realized that John had the ability to cure people he had John cure Melinda Moores, Warden Hal Moores' wife. He was unable to stop John's execution though, which caused him great sadness. He lived in excess of 100 years due to the fact that John passed on a bit of his grace to him when curing Paul of a bladder infection. Paul speculated that it was a curse from God for allowing one of God's chosen to die in such a terrible manner.
