Patrick Sarsfield

Patrick Sarsfield (1655-21 August 1693) was an Irish Jacobite nobleman and general.

Biography[]

Patrick Sarsfield was born in Dublin to a Catholic Anglo-Irish family, and he served under James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth during the Third Anglo-Dutch War before serving in the Rhineland. He returned to England in 1678, and he was expelled from the military after Parliament banned the service of Catholics in the English Army. Sarsfield remained loyal to King James II of England during the Monmouth Rebellion, and he followed James into exile in France following the Glorious Revolution. In 1689, he was elected to the Jacobite "Patriot Parliament" in Ireland, and he was named Earl of Lucan and given command of the Jacobites' military planning due to his hawkish views. After the defeat at the Battle of Aughrim in 1691, Sarsfield was forced to surrender and go into exile in France, and he was killed at the Battle of Landen in 1693.
