Patrick Pearse (10 November 1879-3 May 1916) was an Irish Republican Brotherhood leader during the 1916 Easter Rising.
Biography[]
Patrick Pearse was born in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland on 10 November 1879. Pearse studied at the Royal University of Ireland for two years and studied Irish, English, and French, and he became an Irish nationalist after researching Irish culture. Pearse joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Irish Volunteers to fight against the United Kingdom's rule over Ireland, and he delivered a graveside oration in 1915 that said, "Ireland unfree shall never be at peace." In 1916, he was one of the leaders of the Easter Rising, and he read the "Proclamation of the Irish Republic" from outside the General Post Office of Dublin. After six days of fighting against the British Army, Pearse ordered for his forces to surrender, and Pearse was court-martialled and sentenced to death. On 3 May 1916, he was executed by firing squad, becoming a martyr for the Irish independence movement.
