
Patrick Joseph "Pat" Toomey (17 November 1961-) was the US Senator from Pennsylvania (R) from 3 January 2011 to 3 January 2023, succeeding Arlen Specter and preceding John Fetterman.
Biography[]
Patrick Joseph Toomey was born in Providence, Rhode Island on 17 November 1961, and he attended La Salle Academy before earning a B.A. in government from Harvard College. He was employed as a currency trader by Chemical Bank and by Morgan, Grenfell & Co.. He narrowly lost the Republican Party primary during the 2004 US Senate election, and he served as President of the Club for Growth from 2005 to 2009. In 2010, he defeated Joe Sestak to become a Senator, and he supported school choice, fossil fuels, forest thinning projects, the suspension of Muslim immigration, the deregulation of the financial services industry, background checks for gun sales, homophobia (despite supporting the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in the military), the repeal of Obamacare, the reduction and elimination of taxes, and pro-life legislation. On 4 October 2020, he announced that he would not stand for re-election in 2022, and, on 13 February 2021, he was one of seven Republican senators to vote to convict Donald Trump of incitement of insurrection in his second impeachment trial.
