Charles Patrick "Pat" Roberts (20 April 1936-) was a member of the US Senate from Kansas (R) from 3 January 1997 to 3 January 2021, succeeding Nancy Kassebaum and preceding Roger Marshall. He previously served in the US House of Representatives from Kansas' 1st district from 3 January 1981 to 3 January 1997, succeeding Keith Sebelius and preceding Jerry Moran.
Biography[]
Charles Patrick Roberts was born in Topeka, Kansas on 20 April 1936, the son of Republican National Committee chairman C. Wesley Roberts. He served in the US Marine Corps from 1958 to 1962, and he worked as a newspaper editor until 1967, when he became a Republican Party staffer. In 1981, he won election to the US House of Representatives from Kansas' 1st congressional district, and he never received less than 60% of the vote during his re-election campaigns; in 1988, he ran unopposed. From 1997 to 1997, he served on the House Agriculture Committee. Roberts was elected to the US Senate in 1997, winning 62.02% of the vote. Roberts was anti-abortion, opposed same-sex marriage, opposed Obamacare, was one of 22 senators to ask for President Donald Trump to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, supported warrantless surveillance, and missed 65% of his Agriculture Committee meetings. On 4 January 2019, he decided to retire in 2020.
