The Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) is a social democratic party in Mexico that was formed on 5 May 1989 by Cuauhtemoc Cardenas. Along with the conservative National Action Party of Mexico and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), the PRD is one of the three major parties in the country, having split from the PRI after 1988 electoral fraud. The party advocates social democracy and democratic socialism, while the core of the PRI revolves around centrism. The party's founder, Cuahtemoc Cardenas, was the son of PRI leader and former president Lazaro Cardenas, and he sought to continue his father's leftist legacy by splitting from the corrupt and centrist PRI party and founding a movement that supported socialism and direct democracy. In 2017, the party held 52/500 Chamber of Deputies seats, 8/128 Senate seats, 5/32 governorships, and 143/1,124 state legislature seats.
