The Party for Democracy (PPD) is a social democratic and liberal political party in Chile that was founded in 1987. The party was founded by politicians with a diverse range of political ideologies, with its members ranging from communist militants to former members of the National Party of Chile. The party's founder Ricardo Lagos created the PPD as a legal and social democratic alternative to the banned Socialist Party of Chile, and double membership of the two parties was allowed until 1997. The party would join the left-wing Nueva Mayoria coalition, and it held 15/120 Chamber of Deputies seats, 6/38 Senate seats, 30/278 regional councillor seats, 37/345 mayoral seats, and 269/2,130 communal councillor seats.
