The Parthenopaean Republic was a client state of the French First Republic that governed Naples from 21 January to 13 June 1799. The republic was proclaimed after French general Jean Etienne Championnet took Naples from King Ferdinand IV of Naples, but the republic was short-lived, as the French plunderers were hated by the locals, and Ferdinand had the loyalty of the local clergy and landowners. Cardinal Fabrizio Ruffo's Sanfedismo forces recaptured Naples in June 1799, restoring the Kingdom of Naples.
