Parmenion

Parmenion (400 BC-330 BC) was a general of Macedon under King Philip II of Macedon and his son Alexander the Great

Biography[]

Parmenion was born in 400 BC, and he was a loyal elderly general of King Philip II of Macedon. In 336 BC Philip II sent Parmenion, Amyntas, Andromenes, and Attalus with 10,000 Macedonian troops to prepare for the reduction of Asia. However, his king was assassinated, leaving his son Alexander the Great as the new monarch. Parmenion served as the second-in-command to Alexander, and was also one of his advisers. Parmenion assisted him in the victory at the Battle of Issus by leading a flanking attack on King Darius Codomannus' Persian Empire army. Despite being loyal to Alexander, he was believed to be a member of his son Philotas' conspiracy against Alexander's life in 330 BC (and even if he was not involved in the plot, Alexander feared that he might try to avenge his son after his execution). Alexander had Parmenion assassinated as a precaution, getting rid of his former friend.
