Paolo Boselli

Paolo Boselli (8 June 1838 – 10 March 1932) was Prime Minister of Italy from 18 June 1916 to 29 October 1917, succeeding Antonio Salandra and preceding Vittorio Emanuele Orlando.

Biography[]

Paolo Boselli was born in Savona, Liguria, Italy in 1838. He served as a science professor at the University of Rome before entering politics with the Historical Right party, joining the Liberal Union in 1913, the Italian Liberal Party in 1922, and the National Fascist Party in 1924. He served in the Chamber of Deputies for 51 years and in the Senate from 1921, and, following the collapse of Antonio Salandra's government in 1916 due to several military defeats, the obscure Boselli became Prime Minister. His goverment also fell as a result of a crushing defeat, namely the 1917 Battle of Caporetto, during which Italy lost 800,000 men and all of its territorial gains. He died in Rome in 1932 at the age of 93.
