Panzergrenadiers are the mechanized/motorized infantry of the German, Austrian, and Swiss militaries, with the term being adopted by the Wehrmacht in 1942 to describe its motorized troops during World War II. Most ordinary infantry divisions were upgraded to panzergrenadier divisions, and some of these units would be upgraded to panzer divisions. 226 panzergrenadier battalions served in the Heer of Nazi Germany from 1942 to 1945, but only 11% of the battalions had armored half tracks, with the rest having trucks.
