Paleoconservatism is a conservative political philosophy that stresses limited government, tradition, and civil society, along with religious, regional, national, and Western identity. Paleoconservatism's tenets include restricted immigration, opposition to multicultural programs, decentralizing federal policy, restoring controls upon free trade, emphasizing economic nationalism, supporitng isolationism in American foreign policy, and supporting the recovery of old lines of distinction in society with traditional categories of gender, ethnicity, and race. The term originally referred to conservative and traditionalist Catholics and agrarian southerners who turned to anti-communism during the Cold War, but it came to describe the views of the Old Right that opposed the New Deal during the 1930s and 1940s.
