Pagondas was a Theban general and statesman during the 5th century BC.
Biography[]
Pagondas was born to a noble Theban family, and he was known to be a fiery and persuasive speaker. He became Hegemon of the Boeotian League in the leadup to the Peloponnesian War, motivating the disparate Boeotian contingents to unify and attack their Athenian enemies through rhetoric alone. In 424 BC, he defeated an Athenian army at the Battle of Delium, slaying their general Hippocrates of Athens in the process. This victory helped guarantee Boeotian security, and his unseen employment of tactics would aid in the rise of the later Theban general Epaminondas.
