Duke Payen "the Butler" of Oultrejourdain (1084-1148), was the Duke of Oultrejourdain under the Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1134 to 1148, succeeding Roman of Le Puy and preceding Maurice of Transjordan.
Biography[]
Pagan (known as Payen in French) was born in 1084 to the House of Monreal in France, and he became the butler of King Baldwin II of Jerusalem. In 1134, King Fulk of Jerusalem granted Pagan the fief of Oultrejourdain in the southern parts of the Kingdom of Jerusalem after depriving Roman of Le Puy of his domain, and Pagan ceased to be a butler in 1136. Pagan ruled from the castle of Montreal (present-day Shoubak, Jordan), and he also build the great castle of Kerak. He died in 1148, and his nephew Maurice of Transjordan succeeded him.
