Paddy Armstrong (1950-) was a Northern Irish man who, along with the three other members of the "Guildford Four", was wrongly imprisoned and tortured after being accused of being Provisional Irish Republican Army members.
Biography[]
Paddy Armstrong was born in Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland in 1950, and he was childhood friends with Gerry Conlon. Armstrong moved to London, England for work during the 1970s, and he lived in a squat with Englishwoman Carole Richardson, becoming involved with drugs and petty crime. In 1975, Armstrong and Richardson were arrested after being accused of taking part in the Guildford pub bombings, and they were sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1989, the Court of Appeal in London found the "Guildford Four" innocent after discovering that their confessions were made after the police tortured them, and Armstrong would attempt to transition to a normal life. In 2014, he was one of the pallbearers at Conlon's funeral, carrying his old friend to the grave.
