Pennsylvania is one of the fifty states of the United States, located on the East Coast along the mid-Atlantic region of America. Pennsylvania's charter was given to William Penn by Charles II of England to repay a debt to his father, and the state was named for Penn, meaning "Penn's Woods". The state was a center of religious freedom, and further immigration was attracted to Pennyslvania through the industrialization of the state during the Industrial Revolution and the boom of coal mining. In 2015, the state had a population of 12,802,503 people, with the ancestry groups being 28.50% Germans, 18.20% Irish, 12.80% Italians, 9.60% African-Americans, 8.50% English, 7.20% Polish, 4.20% French Canadians, 2.90% Puerto Ricans, 2.20% Dutch, 2% Slovaks, 2% Scots-Irish, 1.70% Scots, 1.60% Russians, 1.50% Welsh, 1.20% Hungarians, 1% Ukrainians, and 1% Mexicans. 80% are Christian (51% Protestant, 29% Catholic, 1% Jehovah's Witnesses, 1% Orthodox), 13% nonreligious, 2% Jews, 1% other, and 1% agnostic.
