The North American P-51 Mustang was an American-made fighter-bomber plane that was introduced into service with the British Royal Air Force in January 1942 during World War II. Over 15,000 P-51 Mustangs were built by the USA during the war, and they were often used to escort bombers during raids against Nazi Germany during the war. At the start of the Korean War, the F-86 Sabre replaced the Mustang as the main fighter of the United Nations forces, and the Mustang left the service of the Dominican Republic in 1984, instead becoming a stunt and racing plane.
