Ozgul 2

Ozgul (1051-) was a concubine of Emperor Daozong of Liao.

Biography[]

Ozgul was born to a family of Mahayana Buddhist Uyghurs that were at the court of Chief Begluk of Altay. On 13 September 1069 she was taken as a concubine by Emperor Daozong of Liao, who was on friendly terms with her liege. Her new master made her Court Musician of the Liao dynasty to make her happy. On 4 November 1073, she gave birth to Guanjing Liao with her husband.

On 20 August 1074, a plot was discovered where Ozgul sought to assassinate Jun Liao, the eldest son of Daozong by his wife, Khanum Xuan Yi of Liao. Ozgul likely hoped that she would replace Jun Liao as heir apparent with her son, so that when her husband died, her family would rule Mongolia. Having just dealt with Duke Gou'er of Wanyan's sedition and thrown him in the oubliette, Daozong was not in a mood for trickery, and he demanded that she end her plot. She agreed, apologizing to him.
