Oystein Aarseth (22 March 1968-10 August 1993), better known by his stage name Euronymous, was a Norwegian black metal musician. Born in Surnadal, Norway in 1968, he joined the Marxist-Leninist "Red Youth" section of the Workers' Communist Party during the early 1980s, having developed an obsession with the Soviet Union and communist Romania. However, he left the group after realizing that they were mostly humanists, and he later claimed to be a fascist; he was obsessed with dictatorships in general. When he formed the band Mayhem in 1984, he claimed that it and almost all Norwegian black metal bands at the time were neo-Nazis. Aarseth became a Satanist and became the leader of the "Black Metal Inner Circle" cult, and, on 10 August 1993, he was stabbed dead by his former bandmate Varg Vikernes at his Oslo apartment, with Vikernes claiming that Aarseth was planning to murder him in a snuff video after luring him to the apartment to take care of an unsigned contract.
