Ovidio "El Nuevo Raton" Guzman Lopez (born 29 March 1990) was a son of El Chapo and a major leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.
Biography[]
Ovidio Guzman Lopez was born in Sinaloa, Mexico in 1990, a son of Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquin Guzman Loera ("El Chapo"). He became involved in his father's drug trafficking business while he was a teenager, and he, his brothers Ivan Archivaldo Guzman and Jesus Alfredo Guzman, and Ismael Zambada Garcia came to lead the cartel after his father's capture in 2016. In February 2019, the United States charged Ovidio with conspiracy to import and distribute illegal drugs, and, on 17 October 2019, he was captured by the National Guard of Mexico in Culiacan. In response, over 700 gunmen took over a housing complex which housed the relatives of local military personnel and threatened mass civilian casualties unless Ovidio was released, and he was released hours later. By 24 June 2020, El Chapo's sons had taken over the Sinaloa Cartel from Zambada Garcia, who had fallen sick with diabetes. He was recaptured in Culiacan on 5 January 2023 in a dawn raid which resulted in shooting, carjackings, and the damaging of an Aeromexico plane's fuselage by stray gunfire, and he was extradited to the United States on 16 September 2023.
