
Otto Woehler (12 July 1894 – 5 February 1987) was a General der Infanterie of Nazi Germany who was the commander of Army Group South from 28 December 1944 to 6 April 1945 during World War II.
Biography[]
Otto Woehler was born on 12 July 1894 in Gross Burgwedel, Hanover, German Empire. Woehler served as a Lieutenant in the Imperial German Army in World War I, and Erich von Manstein made him his chief-of-staff after meeting him in the Interwar Years. He led the German 8th Army on the front against the Soviet Union during World War II, and on 28 December 1944 he was made commander of Army Group South, succeeding Johannes Friessner. Woehler destroyed the Soviet Union's bridgehead over the Hron River on 22 February 1945, and after the war he was sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in Einsatzgruppen atrocities. He was released in 1950, and he died in 1987.
