Otto III of Bavaria

Otto I, Duke of Bavaria (1117-11 July 1183), called Otto III while counting previous Bavarian rulers of the same name, was Duke of Bavaria from 1180 to 1183, succeeding Henry the Lion and preceding Louis I of Bavaria.

Biography[]

Otto was born in 1117, the son of Otto IV of Wittelsbach and Agnes of Loon. He was from the House of Wittelsbach, and he was loyal to German emperor Frederick Barbarossa during his campaigns in Italy, preventing a defeat for the emperor at Verona in 1155. On 16 September 1180, he succeeded Duke Henry the Lion after Barbarossa stripped him of his title due to his support of the pope against the Hohenstaufen dynasty. In 1183, Otto died while returning from attending the signing of the Peace of Constance with the Lombard League.
