Otto II Wittelsbach, Duke of Bavaria (7 April 1206-29 November 1253), known as Otto IV of Bavaria when counting the earlier Saxon dukes, was the Duke of Bavaria from 1231 to 1253, succeeding Louis I of Bavaria and preceding Louis II of Bavaria and Henry XIII of Bavaria.
Biography[]
Otto was born on 7 April 1206 in Kelheim, and he married Agnes of the Palatinate, a granddaughter of Henry the Lion. He succeeded to the Duchy of Bavaria in 1231 on his father's death, and he supported the Hohenstaufens after making amends with Frederick II of Germany in 1241. His daughter Elizabeth married Frederick's son Conrad IV of Germany, so Otto was excommunicated by the pope as punishment. He died in Landshut in 1253, and Louis II of Bavaria and Henry XIII of Bavaria succeeded him.
