Otto Arosemena

Otto Arosemena (19 July 1925-20 April 1984) was President of Ecuador from 16 November 1966 to 31 August 1968, succeeding Clemente Yerovi and preceding Jose Maria Velasco Ibarra.

Biography[]

Otto Arosemena was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador in 1925, the cousin of Carlos Julio Arosemena Monroy and the cousin, once removed of Carlos Julio Arosemena Tola. He practiced law before becoming a deputy in 1954, President of the Chamber of Deputies in 1957, and a senator in 1960. He fought against the 1963 military junta before being elected President in 1966 as the leader of the Democratic Institutionalist Coalition. Arosemena welcomed national and foreign investment and presided over national development. Arosemena was responsible for a massive school building program before he left office in 1968, when Jose Maria Velasco Ibarra was elected his successor.
