Othniel Looker (4 October 1757 – 23 July 1845) was the Democratic-Republican Governor of Ohio from 24 March to 8 December 1814, succeeding Return J. Meigs Jr. and preceding Thomas Worthington.
Biography[]
Othniel Looker was born in Morris County, New Jersey in 1757, and he was raised in Hanover Township and served in the patriot militia during the American Revolutionary War. He came to work as a schoolteacher on Long Island and served in the New York State Assembly from 1803 to 1804 before moving to Hamilton County, Ohio in 1804 and serving in the State House from 1807 to 1810, in the State Senate from 1810 to 1812 and from 1813 to 1817, and as Governor of Ohio in 1814 after Return J. Meigs Jr. became Postmaster General. After his wife's death, he settled in Palestine, Illinois, and he served as a presidential elector for James Monroe in 1816. He died in 1845.
