Otay warehouse raid

The Otay warehouse raid occurred in early 1989 when a group of Sinaloa Cartel associates led by El Chapo and El Guero assaulted a Tijuana Cartel warehouse near Otay, Mexico. The Sinaloa gunmen killed several Tijuana enforcers in a shootout before stealing a large drug shipment in a covered truck, retaliating against the cartel for the Guadalajara safehouse bombing. The theft of the large shipment led to President Carlos Salinas de Gortari meeting with US ambassador Charles J. Pilliod Jr., General Eugenio Blanco, Institutional Revolutionary Party secretary Conrado Higuera Sol, and DEA administrator John C. Lawn, and they decided to release the imprisoned Amado Carrillo Fuentes so that Carrillo could negotiate peace between the warring cartels. The two sides agreed to make peace, but the rivalry continued, and the Tijuana Cartel had El Guero's wife and children killed before sending him a tape of the ordeal. The war continued with the Christine nightclub shootout.
