Oswine of Deira (585-651) was King of Deira from 644 to 651, succeeding Oswiu of Northumbria and preceding Oethelwald of Deira.
Biography[]
Oswine was born in Yorkshire, England in 585, the son of King Osric of Deira. Following Oswald of Northumbria's death at the Battle of Maserfield, Oswine claimed the throne of Deira, once again diving Northumbria into Deira and Bernicia. Oswine went to war with Oswiu of Northumbria, but Oswine refused to fight Oswiu and retreated to the home of his friend Humwald. Humwald betrayed Oswine to Oswiu's soldiers, and Oswine was then put to death. He was later venerated as a Christian saint.
