Osraige

Osraige, also known as Ossory, was an Irish kingdom which existed from 150 AD to 1541, with Kilkenny serving as its capital. It was founded by Oengus Osrithe within the province of Leinster, and, from the 5th century to 859, it was nominally ruled by Munster. In 859, Cerball mac Dunlainge asserted Osraige's independence, and it became a major power over the next three centuries. The kingdom was weakened by internal infighting and was destroyed during the Norman invasion of England in 1169, with William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke conquering much of Osraige. The northern part of the kingdom survived until 1541, when King Henry VIII incorporated the hereditary lordship into England as a barony.
