Osman Bey

Osman Bey (1860-) was the Ottoman Turkish Governor of Balikesir under Sultan Mehmed VI. In 1922, he hired the American mercenaries Josh Corey and Adam Dyer to escort a caravan containing his daughters to Cairo, secretly having the jewels of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, fake gold, and the Caliph Uthman's Quran be hidden in the caravan, with all of those treasures being able to stir up pro-Ottoman resistance against Mustafa Kemal's nationalists once they inevitably seized power in Turkey. Osman Bey privately arranged for Colonel Ahmed Elci to betray the mercenaries once they reached Izmir (Smyrna), from which the Ottomans would take an American ship, the Star of Islam, to the safety of Cairo. Osman Bey's plan went awry when his daughters' guardian Aila betrayed and killed Elci and instead plotted with Corey to steal the treasures for themselves, and, after several betrayals, she ultimately delivered the Quran to Kemal himself and kept the jewels for herself.
